Grades and languages

One lesson, answers written in different ways

Lapmin explains the same subject differently for each school level. An S2 mark (Finnish as a second language in Finland) changes only how Lapmin writes that student’s Finnish answers. It uses techniques from easy-to-read Finnish. Its Swedish and English answers are written for language learners.

Lower secondary, without S2 mark

The student’s Finnish question, “Miksi karhu nukkuu talvella?”, and Lapmin’s answer for a lower secondary class. It begins “Karhu nukkuu talvella, koska kylmänä vuodenaikana sen ravintoa on vähän saatavilla.” The answer goes on to discuss energy, fat reserves and how a bear’s winter sleep differs from a hedgehog’s hibernation. A source from the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation appears below. The same Finnish question and the opening of the answer without an S2 mark. It describes scarce winter food, winter sleep and fat reserves; the rest of the answer is cropped.

Lower secondary, with S2 mark

The same Finnish question and Lapmin’s answer for an S2-marked student at lower secondary level. It begins “Karhu nukkuu talvella, koska silloin ruokaa on vähän ja sitä on vaikea löytää.” Shorter sentences then describe winter sleep, energy and fat reserves. A source from the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation appears below. The same question and the opening of the S2-marked answer. Short sentences say that food is hard to find in winter and winter sleep saves energy; the rest of the answer is cropped.
A student asks in Finnish, “Miksi karhu nukkuu talvella?” (“Why does a bear sleep in winter?”). The examples show Lapmin’s answers at the same school level, with and without an S2 mark. Compare their word choice and sentence structure.
  • School level changes how Lapmin explains. In grades 1–6, it takes concrete, small steps. In grades 7–9, the reasoning can be longer, and Lapmin may ask students to compare sources. The length and vocabulary of answers change too.

  • Lapmin explains the concepts students need in everyday words. For an S2-marked student, it uses techniques from easy-to-read Finnish and makes causes and the order of events clear. The answer keeps the information needed to understand the subject.

  • Language learners get the subject content too. In Swedish and English answers, Lapmin uses language at A1–A2 level for grades 1–6 and A2–B1 for grades 7–9. It explains subject terms when needed.

How teachers set school level, S2 and language

  1. 1

The teacher sets the class’s school level

When creating a class, the teacher chooses “Primary school” for grades 1–6 or “Lower secondary” for grades 7–9. The setting can later be changed under Class actions → School level. Each class has one school level at a time.

The “Class school level” dialog offers “Primary school” and “Lower secondary”. “Lower secondary” is selected, with “Cancel” and “Save” buttons below.
  2. 2

The teacher marks students studying Finnish as a second language

The teacher sets the S2 mark student by student in the class roster. It can be changed later; the change affects only that student’s subsequent answers in Finnish. Only the teacher sees the S2 mark; it does not appear in the student view or on the name list students use to join.

The teacher’s roster shows first names in two columns. Amina and Elli have an S2 mark beside their names. Each row also shows a subject or “Needs you”. The demo class names are fictional. The first five roster rows are visible. Amina and Elli have an S2 mark. The names are fictional.
  3. 3

The student writes in their chosen language

In settings, the student chooses Finnish, Swedish or English under Language, then writes their question in that language. Lapmin replies in the selected language.

The Swedish student view for a primary school class. A student asks “Varför sover björnen på vintern?” Lapmin’s reply begins “Björnen vilar på vintern för att spara energi när det finns lite mat.” A source and the message field “Fråga om dina skoluppgifter” appear below.

Questions about grades and Finnish as a second language

Can teachers change a class’s school level later?

Yes. Under Class actions, the teacher opens School level and saves the new setting. It affects later answers.

Can a teacher change a student’s S2 mark?

Yes. The teacher can change it in the class roster. The change applies to that student’s later answers in Finnish.

Can students with and without an S2 mark be in the same class?

Yes. The mark is set for each student, so students in one class can receive Finnish answers written in different ways.

How is the level of Swedish and English answers set?

It follows the class’s school level automatically. There is no separate setting.
